Johan van Dorp, Shell, will give a talk entitled "Does Heavy Oil Recovery Need Steam?" as part of the Claude R. Hocott Graduate Seminar Series.

Bio: Johan van Dorp leads the In-Situ research team at Shell’s Technology Centre in Calgary, focusing on improved in-situ heavy-oil recovery technologies.  He is Principal Technical Expert for thermal EOR in the Shell Group and has been involved with most thermal developments in Shell operating companies.  Johan joined Shell in 1981 and has served on several international assignments in petroleum engineering and related roles.  He holds a degree in experimental physics from the University of Utrecht, Netherlands.

Abstract: Heavy oil production is becoming increasingly important in the global mix of oil production.  It has historically been disadvantaged by low recovery efficiency or high energy utilisation for recovery under steam injection.  The vast resources are now being developed, and oil companies are conducting R&D to unlock the reserves using recovery techniques with significantly improved GHG footprint.  Examples of some of the technological improvements will be discussed.
