Mark your calendars for the annual SPE Local Paper Contest! This contest is February 26, 2016, and you can sign up until January 22, 2016.

This is a GREAT way to show initiative and extra effort on resumes and to recruiters.  In this environment, nearly every PGE student needs this advantage.  Also, it’s a great way for the industry members who judge the competition to see your work.

Below are some details on the competition, including why YOU should sign-up to compete.

What: SPE Local Paper Contest

• While titled a paper contest, it’s more of a presentation competition. Students will present their 20-minute or less presentation on their research or industry internship work in front of industry judges.
• There are three divisions for the Paper Contest – the B.S. Division, the M.S. Division, and the Ph.D. Division.
• You’ll want to make sure you have the appropriate permissions to present your work. If you have any questions on this, we can help!

When: Friday, February 26, 2016

• 30 minute time slots will be available between 8:30 am- 4 pm on Friday, February 26, 2016. You can set up your time in advance so it works with your class schedule.

Where: CPE Building

Why: There are many reasons why you should participate, but here are a few:

• Cash Prizes
  • 1^st Place: $500
  • 2^nd Place: $250
  • 3^rd Place: $125

• The top two contestants in each division will go on to compete in the SPE Regional Contest here at UT on April 2, 2016.  YOU’LL HAVE HOME TURF ADVANTAGE!
• Bragging rights! Last year, we had Yogashri Pradhan (an undergraduate student) win 1^st place internationally in her division! We also had winners in 2012 (Mahdy Shirdel, PhD – 1^st place), 2013 (Brandon Hilts, BS-3^rd Place, AND Shaina Kelly, MS -1^st place), and 2014 (Joseph Tansey, MS – 1^st Place)

Please email hernando@austin.utexas.edu with indication of your interest in competing by Friday, January 22. Abstracts won’t be due until the beginning of February, so all you will need is your classification (BS, MS, PhD), and a brief description of your topic.
