Dr. Lou Durlofsky, Stanford University, will give a seminar entitled "Reduced-order models for subsurface flow and geological characterization" as part of the Claude R. Hocott Seminar Series.

Abstract: In this talk, I will present our recent work on reduced-order representations for both subsurface flow and geological descriptions. Geological parameterizations based on a variant of principal component analysis (PCA) will be discussed. These representations enable us to describe complex geological models using relatively few parameters. Results using the PCA-type approach for data assimilation demonstrate that the method is capable of providing history-matched models of channelized systems. Next, a reduced-order modeling technique applicable for subsurface flow simulations will be described. This approach, called trajectory piecewise linearization (TPWL), entails linearization around previously simulated states and projection into a low-dimensional subspace. A prototype procedure that combines the TPWL model for flow with a PCA representation for geological properties will be presented. This approach applies reduced-order representations for both flow and geology, and provides results of reasonable accuracy relative to those achieved using full-order representations.
