The Petroleum Graduate Student Association (PGSA) will be hosting Lorena Moscardelli from Statoil for a technical seminar on Monday, October 24th at 6:00 PM in CPE 2.214. Lorena has a PhD from UT’s Jackson School of Geosciences and is currently a principle researcher for the R&D division of Statoil in Austin. 

Title: From Submarine Landslides to Mars: >10 Years Later – The Journey

Abstract: This talk summarizes a wide range of research topics concerning submarine landslides. We will revisit early work that was pursued in eastern offshore Trinidad where geomorphological complexities of these units were extensively examined using three-dimensional seismic data. We will also discuss issues associated with classification schemes for submarine landslides and the importance to link their morphology with potential causal mechanisms. The study of submarine landslides is highly relevant for the oil and gas industry because these units can play an important role as seals and sometimes as reservoirs! Processes link to submarine landslide generation are also relevant because they can create accommodation and influence subsequent deposition of reservoir prone facies. We will also examine more “exotic” components of the submarine landslide “science” and we will briefly talk about Mars (the planet!).

Lorena will also talk briefly about the “new” Statoil research hub in Austin. Who are these guys and what are they doing in the musical capital of Texas?
