Speaker:  Dr. Patrick Brady, Senior Scientist in the Advanced Nuclear Energy Programs department at Sandia National Laboratories

Title of Seminar: “Altering Wettability, Designing Anti-viral Drugs, and Preventing Potholes”

Abstract: The chemical reactions controlling adhesion of oil to reservoirs, viruses to cells, and asphalt to aggregate are very similar, and can be understood through surface complexation analysis of the respective interfaces.  I will outline the electrostatic approach to wettability alteration in sandstones, carbonates, and shales, and consider how the approach might be used to design waterflood and slickwater chemistry, and broad spectrum anti-viral drugs.

Biography:  Patrick V. Brady is a Senior Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories and has authored or co-authored several dozen peer-reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, and 18 patents in the fields of geochemistry, water treatment, enhanced oil recovery, nuclear waste disposal, and climate change. He joined Sandia in 1993 and is also adjunct Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, New Mexico.

Dr. Brady went to the University of California, Berkeley on a football scholarship in 1980, started 2 years as Offensive Center, and got a Bachelor's Degree in Geology in 1984, a Ph.D. in Geology - from Northwestern University in 1989, and did a Post-Doc at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Water Treatment Institute (EAWAG) in 1990.
