Graduate Student Seminar Series - Dr. Ganesh Thakur

Monday, February 24, 2020
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Location: CPE 2.204

Dr. Ganesh Thakur, Director of Energy Industry Partnerships and Distinguished Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Houston, will present on "CO2 for EOR as CCUS: Carbon Dioxide for EOR - Historical Perspectives, Current Technology Status and Technological Challenges".

Abstract:

CO2 EOR is a proven technology and has demonstrated significant success over nearly five decades in conventional oilfields in US. Contribution of CO2 EOR has been substantial: 135 plus ongoing projects, oil production rate of 300,000 BOPD (miscible), and 3% of US total oil production. Anthropogenic sources of CO2 capture, storage and utilization for EOR is rapidly growing in the US and worldwide.CO2 EOR is a proven technology and has demonstrated significant success over nearly five decades in conventional oilfields in US. Contribution of CO2 EOR has been substantial: 135 plus ongoing projects, oil production rate of 300,000 BOPD (miscible), and 3% of US total oil production. Anthropogenic sources of CO2 capture, storage and utilization for EOR is rapidly growing in the US and worldwide.CO2 EOR is the next frontier of unconventional resources and has the potential to double the recovery factor. UH is actively involved in transferring carbon capture technologies for EOR to various operators through field demonstration projects and building capability in EOR for unconventional reservoirs. We are currently involved with a carbon capture and sequestration pilot project for the Oil India Ltd. During our study, we discovered the fields first needed to be upgraded to create the requisite conditions with effective reservoir management in order to prepare them for carbon dioxide EOR. Our research work indicates that the EOR will be successful, and the company now needs to find additional sources of carbon dioxide for expansion and other projects, in addition to a petrochemical plant near the oil field that was originally identified as a source.
