“Soaking and Flowback of Unconventional Wells”

 

Abstract:

Unconventional petroleum production is facing serious economic and environmental challenges. Addressing such challenges requires efficient and reliable techniques to evaluate and optimize fracturing operations.

For instance, the industry needs to understand 1) the fate of non-recovered fracturing water, 2) the source of produced salts, and 3) the effects of the soaking process on flowback and production of stimulated wells. Furthermore, it is of great interest to understand how these phenomena are controlled by rock/fluid properties and fracture complexity.

This presentation will show how some of these questions can be answered by 1) material-balance, rate-transient, and chemical analysis of flowback water and 2) laboratory analysis of rock-fluid interactions.

 

Biography:

Hassan Dehghanpour is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. His primary research interests include measurement and modeling of multiphase flow in porous media for applications in enhanced oil recovery and petroleum production from shale reservoirs. He has authored or coauthored over 70 refereed-journal and conference papers, mainly related to reservoir engineering aspects of unconventional reservoirs.

He is the recipient of the 2014 Young Member Outstanding Service Award, and 2015 Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Faculty, both in Canada region. He holds two BS degrees in Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, a MS from University of Alberta, and a PhD from University of Texas at Austin, both in petroleum engineering.
