Student Computing
The Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering Department provides
students with three PC computer labs for class work, e-mail and web
activity. Computers in each lab are frequently upgraded to keep pace
with advancing PC technology (we currently run Pentium IV
processors). We have the most current petroleum industry software
programs installed for student use which are utilized in classroom
instruction and assignments. Open network ports in the student study
lounge, and in the Reading Room, also allow students to connect their
own laptop computers to our high-speed network.
Research Computing
The department maintains several Unix machines for more advanced
computing tasks as well as an Intel parallel computing cluster for
reservoir simulation work. The department has an active research
program applying state-of-the-art computer technology to petroleum
industry problems (see parallel
reservoir simulation). We are also closely allied with the Texas
Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics through the Center
for Subsurface Modeling, a research program specializing in fluid flow
modeling that utilizes supercomputer technology.
