Major Sequence
Frequently Asked Questions

Current Students :: Undergraduates :: Major Sequence

The major sequence is a set of courses, normally taken in the last two years of undergraduate study, in which the student learns to put to engineering use the tools and basic concepts learned in the basic sequence. The Admissions Committee of the College of Engineering will consider your application for admission to the Major sequence after your web application has been submitted.

Deadlines for admission:
March 1 for admission for the following Summer or Fall
October 1 for admission for the following Spring

The deadlines are priority deadlines and failure to apply in a timely basis may delay admission to the major sequence. All late applications are processed in the order received, but have no guarantee of notification by the next registration period.

Note for transfer students: A transfer student’s application to the major sequence is considered only after the student has been admitted to the University.

Students will be notified that they have been:

ADMITTED into the Major Sequence, which means the student has met the three main requirements:
  1. Completion of specific basic sequence coursework, all of which appears on the student’s official transcript (coursework taken at the university, transferred coursework and credit by examination).
  2. Has earned a 2.0 grade point average in the basic sequence courses completed at The University of Texas as Austin for either the Petroleum Engineering or Geosystems Engineering degree.
  3. Is not on academic or scholastic probation.

CONDITIONALLY ADMITTED into the Major Sequence, which means the student will be permitted to enroll in Major Sequence courses for the next semester while completing basic sequence courses. Specific grade and course completion requirements will be indicated for full admission to the Major Sequence. The student’s record is automatically reviewed at the end of each semester to determine if the conditions have been satisfied. Students do not need to reapply for admission unless they are dropped from the Conditional Major sequence.

Note: A student who knows they will not satisfy the conditions for Major Admission should contact the major sequence advisor in the College of Engineering (ECJ 2.200) at 471-4321 as soon as possible.

CURRENTLY INELIGIBLE for admission, which may be denied due to:

  1. Basic Sequence courses have not been completed in the requested degree plan. Students need seven (7) or less hours of basic sequence courses to be Conditionally admitted. All transfer work must appear on the official transcript and petitions made for any earned credit by examination.
  2. Student has not maintained a 2.0 GPA in the Basic Sequence courses.
  3. Student is subject to either scholastic or academic probation.
  4. Student has a borderline situation and the application is being held until the current semester grades are posted for a decision to be made.

Any student who has been denied admission to a major sequence will not be considered for admission for a subsequent semester unless a new application is submitted.

No engineering student may register for a course identified as a major sequence course in any of the degree plans of the College of Engineering unless the student has been admitted to the major sequence. The prerequisite of some courses indicate that students who have not been admitted to the major sequence may register with the consent of the instructor. In this case, the instructor has the authority to admit non-engineering majors to the class if they are otherwise qualified, but may not admit engineering majors who have not been admitted to the appropriate major sequence.

Students may appeal the decision of the Major Application Committee. Students must appeal if they cannot improve their academic condition to satisfy the conditions for Major Sequence. Instructions for appealing are available online at http://www.engr.utexas.edu/current/policies/majorsequence.cfm.
