- Chun Huh,
Research Professor
Ph.D. Chemical Engineering
University of Minnesota
Dr. Chun Huh joined the faculty of the College of Engineering as a Research Professor in
2004. Dr. Huh previously worked as an Engineering Advisor at ExxonMobil Upstream Research Co. in Houston.
Dr. Huh’s main research area is enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, with particular emphasis on process
modeling and development of reservoir simulators for EOR applications. In 2004, he and colleagues received
a DOE research grant to develop novel ways of employing pH-sensitive polymers to improve oil recovery from
mature oil reservoirs. This allows cost-effective production of large amounts of oil still left in existing,
non-economic reservoirs which may otherwise be abandoned. Another research area that Dr. Huh is currently
involved is the hydrodynamic modeling of sedimentary flow and subsequent formation of clastic and carbonate
deposits, and the development of novel ways to constrain the model with field data. Such process-based modeling
with improved understanding of oil reservoir genesis is aimed at developing geologic models that are more
reliable for reservoir management purposes.
Current Research Projects
- Process modeling and simulation for EOR processes
- Sedimentary flow simulations for improved geologic modeling
- Development of improved surfactant- and polymer-based EOR methods
- Heavy oil recovery from unconsolidated sands
