The Department of Energy recently made a grant of $994,702 to the University of Texas for the purpose of educating a skilled workforce prepared to lead the Carbon Capture and Storage Industry. The funds will be used to create the Alliance for Sequestration Training, Outreach, Research and Education (STORE) which brings together researchers from the Institute for Geophysics, the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering and the Bureau of Economic Geology.
PGE Associate Professor Steven Bryant will serve as principal investigator for the project, Hilary Olson (UTIG) is project director and co-principal investigator, and Sue Hovorka (BEG) is also co-principal investigator. PGE Faculty members Jon Olson, Larry Lake, Carlos Torres-Verdin, Sanjay Srinivasan, and Paul Bommer will be active as co-investigators in the program.
Steven Bryant commented that the Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, not only houses one of the leading research groups in geologic carbon sequestration, but educates 15 percent of the undergraduates in petroleum engineering in the U.S., making it well-suited to help lead the effort in this new workforce training. Congratulations to all.
