Still wondering what happened to create the Deepwater Horizon disaster? Chairman Tad Patzek and Professor Joseph Tainter (Utah State University)
have just written a book about the event. Drilling Down: The Gulf Oil Debacle and Our Energy Dilemma, published by Springer,
delves into the worst environmental disaster in US history. Tainter, author of The Collapse of Complex Societies, and Patzek, a member of the Ocean Energy Safety Advisory Committee,
use the Gulf oil spill to examine the complex role of energy in the modern world.
“It’s hardly surprising in such a complicated system that so many missteps were made, and so we need to think really hard to lessen the number of missteps
in the future,” Patzek said. “In the future, if we keep on our current course, we’ll need even more energy. In the book, we’re asking whether this future is possible.
We’re trying to look at the connection between the here and now, and the future.” A book that goes beyond the finger pointing to look at the underlying causes of the
spill. More information about the book can be found at the Springer and Amazon websites.
