News :: Leadership change in Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering

Larry Lake, a faculty member at The University of Texas at Austin since 1978, has assumed the position of interim chairman of the Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering.

Lake, holder of the W. A. Moncrief Centennial Endowed Chair in Petroleum Engineering, was appointed by Dean Ben Streetman of the College of Engineering following the resignation of the department’s previous chair, William Rossen.

Rossen relinquished the chairmanship to accept an engineering chairmanship at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.

“William Rossen’s leadership as chair is greatly appreciated. He will be missed,” said Streetman. “But I am certain that our top-ranked petroleum and geosystems department will continue to flourish under Larry Lake’s leadership since he has been instrumental in the department’s development for many years.”

Lake previously served as departmental chairman from 1989-1997, and has served on several college committees.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Lake specializes in reservoir engineering and geochemistry. More specifically, he studies enhanced oil recovery and reservoir characterization. Lake’s work in quantifying the effects of geochemical interactions and flow variability for resource recovery is now widely applied by industry.

His reservoir characterization work includes demonstrating that different geological depositional processes produce flow properties that can be statistically described. He was also among the first to recognize the importance of rock-fluid chemical interactions on enhanced oil recovery.
