News :: Torres-Verdín & Formation Evaluation Group Honored at SPWLA Meeting

Associate Professor Carlos Torres-Verdín was recently notified that his research group will be honored at the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts' 48th Annual Symposium. Torres-Verdín's research group is being given the Best Presentation award for a paper delivered at the 2006 Annual SPWLA Meeting. This first-place Symposium paper is "Pore-Scale Analysis of the Waxman-Smits Shaly Sand Conductivity Model" by S. Devarajan, E. Toumelin, C. Torres-Verdín (University of Texas at Austin) and E. C. Thomas (Bayou Petrophysics). In a related honor, Torres-Verdín serves as a SPWLA Distinguished Technical Speaker for 2006-2007; this is a recognition awarded to prominent, articulate speakers.

Torres-Verdin's research group will also be recognized at this meeting with the Best Paper award for a Refereed Paper published during 2006 in the journal Petrophysics. This recognition is for "Estimation of permeability from borehole array induction measurements: application to the petrophysical appraisal of tight-gas sands" by J. M. Salazar, C. Torres-Verdín, F. O. Alpak, T. M. Habashy, and J. D. Klein, in Petrophysics 2006, v. 47, no. 6, pp. 527-544.

The Formation Evaluation group headed by Carlos will be recognized for these achievements at the 2007 SPWLA Annual International Conference, to be held here in Austin on June 3-6. In addition to Co-Chairing the conference, Carlos is co-author of eight more papers to be presented at the Symposium. The prominence and awards bestowed to UT Austin's Formation Evaluation group is an indication of the drive and exceptional quality of research developed by graduate students and research staff. Congratulations to the Formation Evaluation group for these well deserved honors!
