News :: Olson and Laubach Naturally Fractured Reservoir Research Funded

An interdisciplinary group led by Dr. Jon Olson and Dr. Steve Laubach (Bureau of Economic Geology) was awarded a $750,000 grant to study naturally fractured reservoirs from the Department of Energy's Basic Energy Sciences Division. The three year project will study production in the Piceance Basin in Northwest Colorado. During the past six years, improved technology has resulted in production of 600,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day, four times the previous yield of the Piceance Basin. Drs. Olson and Laubach will use their expertise in structural geology, geomechanics, geochemistry and sedimentary geology to determine techniques that will further improve the yield of natural gas from Piceance Basin and other difficult fields. Geocosm, Ltd. and UT's Fracture Research and Application Consortia will work with Drs Olson and Laubach in developing this technology.
