News:: Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunity

Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering will offer research programs for undergraduate students from June 1, 2009, to August 10, 2009. Participants will spend 10 weeks conducting research in an area of petroleum and geosystems engineering. Students will be exposed to ongoing research in the department through weekly meetings and research seminars. Social activities intended to foster assimilation into research teams are also planned. At the conclusion of the program, students are expected to submit a research paper and present their research in an open forum.

  • Enhanced hydrocarbon recovery
  • CO2 Sequestration
  • Methane Hydrates
  • Subsurface characterization
  • Heavy Oil Recovery
  • Numerical reservoir simulation
  • Reservoir engineering
  • Production engineering
  • Drilling engineering
  • Environmental remediation

Support:

All participants will receive a $5000 stipend for the ten-week period, paid in two equal installments.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students in any engineering discipline, geosciences or natural sciences (physics, chemistry) with a strong desire to earn a PhD in petroleum and geosystems engineering.
  • Students who have completed at least their sophomore year.
  • Students with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents

Selection:

Selection will be based on academic qualifications, recommendations and statement of scientific interests and career goals. Applicants will give the name and phone number of a faculty member who agrees to recommend the student for the opportunity. It is anticipated that 10 outstanding students will be selected for Summer 2009.
