The estimation of hydrocarbon in-place of a reservoir requires an accurate determination of the reservoir permeability, porosity, fluid saturation, fluid type, lithology, and the areal distribution. There are two primary sources of this information: geophysical wireline well logs and formation cores. The two measurements should be used together to develop petrophysical models to generate the values of these reservoir properties.

A detailed analysis of well logs and core data is used to provide a mineralogical and petrophysical description of the Yeso Formation, an oil-bearing carbonate in the Central Basin Platform of New Mexico. A comprehensive logging suite was run, and whole core was taken, over the entire formation. A statistically-based least-squares approach is used to analyze the data, using a sophisticated workstation-based system which can handle the large amount of data available as well as perform the extensive calculations.
