by
Thakun Jiwalai, MSE

University of Texas at Austin, 1996
Supervisor: K.E. Gray

The petroleum industry is currently focusing on cost reduction and efficiency more than ever. Slimhole drilling and completion technologies offer significant cost saving potential for the industry. As new technologies related to slimhole wells have been continuously developed and available for field utilization, slimhole techniques have become more acceptable to many operators in the industry. Similar technologies are also considered by UNOCAL Thailand company to develop its gas fields located in the Gulf of Thailand. Presently, slimhole wells have become an alternative for the company to lower development cost for its gas wells.

The report discusses slimhole utilization in the Gulf of Thailand. It describes the slimhole related applications and operations, which include both engineering and economic aspects. Current slimhole drilling and completion technologies are detailed. In addition, the effects of slimhole to the well intervention program are examined according to work categories. Finally, an economic evaluation is performed.
