An undergraduate conducts research in a UT PGE lab

Welcome to the world’s top petroleum engineering program.
The Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (UT PGE) consistently tops global and national rankings, like those compiled annually by Quacquarelli Symonds and U.S. News & World Report. What starts in our labs, in our classrooms, in the collaborations between our faculty, students and industry partners, is indelibly changing the energy landscape and improving the quality of life for people across the planet.

We are energy experts — in oil and gas and beyond.
Our faculty oversee nearly $10 million in research funding that focuses on all aspects of subsurface engineering. We lead the way in traditional research areas like formation evaluation, reservoir engineering and enhanced oil recovery. And we’re quite literally breaking new ground in fields that are crucial for a sustainable energy future, including machine learning and data analytics, carbon capture and storage, geothermal energy, methane emissions mitigation, hydrogen storage, and rare earth elements.

We care about our students.
Our faculty are incredible teachers. They bring their expertise into the classroom to provide a robust yet flexible curriculum that addresses real-world energy needs. They serve as research and career mentors, bring renowned speakers to campus, lead programs like our annual Energy AI Hackathon and study abroad trip to Croatia, and more. Our award-winning staff is also committed to students’ success, through programs like our PEN Pal mentors, First-Year Fall Retreat and SURI (Summer Undergraduate Research Internship).

What starts here changes the world.
UT PGE transforms students into creative thinkers and leaders prepared to tackle the oil and gas industry’s toughest challenges, from providing sustainable, reliable and affordable energy for the world to spearheading the energy transition.

We are experts. We are innovators. We are shaping the future of energy. Come change the world with us.
