    Energy Science and Technology Institute 2024

    July 15–19, 2024

    The University of Texas at Austin’s Energy Science and Technology Institute (ESTI) introduces STEM high school teachers to the latest technological innovations in the Texas energy industry, with specific applications in the areas of subsurface engineering and geology. Teachers visited Houston to engage with industry professionals at ConocoPhillips to learn more about career opportunities in the energy industry. the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Weiss Energy Hall to learn more about the energy industry. The final day of the institute includes visiting the Ocean Star Museum in Galveston, TX, to learn more about offshore production.

    Southwest Section AAPG Annual Conference

    April 20, 2024

    The AAPG–Southwest Section 2024 Convention in Abilene, Texas, sponsored Rock Solid: Teaching with Energy, an Earth Science/Energy workshop for K–12 STEM teachers. The mission of the workshop is to enrich teacher knowledge and provide standards-correlated content to help educators feel more comfortable teaching earth science and energy curriculum. Teachers will also learn about STEM career opportunities in earth science and energy industries.

    Visiting Scientist/Engineer: Belton High School

    Feb. 22, 2024

    Dr. Jon Olson gave a presentation to AP Environmental Science students to discuss the environmental implications of hydraulic fracturing and offshore drilling. He discussed career opportunities in subsurface energy and provided information related degree programs offered in the Hildebrand Dept of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering.

    OnRamps Geoscience Course Presentation

    Feb. 6, 2024

    Dr. Jon Olson conducted a virtual presentation called Hydraulic Fracturing and Horizontal Drilling: How Technology Revolutionized the World of Energy. Participating teachers learned more about the dynamics of resource extraction and the demands for reliable energy. Educators can use the content to enrich their current lessons, which cover natural resources and production.

    Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST) 2023

    Nov. 9–11, 2023

    Sponsored by the Science Teacher Association of Texas (STAT). The Hildebrand Outreach Team sponsored a booth in the conference exhibit hall to engage with Texas science educators and share information about professional development opportunities and classroom resources. In addition to a booth in the conference exhibit hall, the Outreach Team facilitated two 2-hour workshops for high school educators.
