Prospective Students :: Graduates :: Graduate Fellowships

Fellowships and assistantships are available in the Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Austin for qualified M. S. and Ph. D. students. Stipends as large as $20,000 per calendar year plus all required tuition and fees are available to highly qualified students. Additional fellowships or scholarships may also be given to a select few. Research projects are available in the areas of:

  • high performance computing
  • reservoir characterization
  • reservoir engineering
  • reservoir simulation
  • groundwater characterization and remediation
  • groundwater modeling
  • petrophysics
  • well stimulation
  • rock mechanics
  • drilling

The process for obtaining financial aid from the department is as follows:

  • One must first apply to the Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering Department and indicate that financial assistance is wanted.

  • Once admitted, the Graduate Studies Committee considers departmental fellowships based solely on scholarly achievements or other criteria such as country of origin. This is an automatic process so please do not contact the Graduate Studies Committee regarding possible fellowships. The limited number of fellowships are typically only given to applicants who filed early in the process. Ideally, an applicant will be notified by March or April if he or she has been awarded a fellowship.

  • Once admitted to the department, the application (and any prior decisions on fellowships) is also automatically forwarded to all faculty in the department. The faculty will review each application to identify highly qualified individuals that they may want to hire as research assistants or as possible teaching assistants. Each faculty member makes his or her own determinations based on the candidate qualifications and his or her financial resources and projects.

It is possible that an applicant may obtain a fellowship and a research assistantship. In such cases, the fellowship is generally added to the financial value of the research assistantship.

Applicants with backgrounds in engineering, applied mathematics and science or the geosciences are invited to apply. For more information, contact:
