Speaker: Silviu Livescu, PhD Chief Scientist at Baker Hughes

Title: Coiled Tubing Technologies – Present and Future

Abstact: For almost 60 years, coiled tubing has been an intervention technology primarily used to maintain or increase production, fulfilling the vital requirements for intervening on live wells. This lecture will highlight several industry-leading technologies developed in the last years by the Baker Hughes Coiled Tubing Research and Engineering group in Calgary, Canada and used globally for such operations as cleanouts, stimulation, milling and drilling, plug setting, and logging. In order to increase certainty in unknown downhole conditions, enhance efficiency, and address the recent severe shortage of experienced coiled tubing personnel, a telemetry system consisting of hardware and software has been developed for real-time optimization and automation of the coiled tubing operations. The lecture will conclude discussing the continuous development and significance of the current coiled tubing technologies within the energy transition.

Bio: Dr. Silviu Livescu is the pressure pumping chief scientist in the global Coiled Tubing Research and Engineering center of Baker Hughes in Calgary, Canada, with fundamental and applied research, industrial research and development, innovation, commercialization, and intellectual property experience related to several technical disciplines, authoring more than 30 US and many international patents, granted and pending, and more than 60 papers and articles. Silviu is the 2020-2023 SPE Data Science and Engineering Analytics Technical Director, an SPE distinguished member, and an executive editor for the Journal Petroleum Science and Engineering. Silviu holds BS and MS degrees from Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania and a PhD degree from the University of Delaware, all in mechanical engineering.
